Semi truck backup on Russian border

RIGA — Hundreds of semi trucks are backed up on the Latvian-Russian border Wednesday after Russian officials implemented stricter inspections overnight.

The Russian RIA Novosti news agency reported that Russian authorities are accusing Latvian truckers of not paying taxes and violating customs laws. The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has contacted the Russian State Department, arguing the extra measures are unfair and that the Latvian government can punish trucking companies in violation by revoking their license instead of punishing all drivers.

Since the new inspection policy began without prior notification Tuesday night, some lorries have been waiting in the bitter -14 Celsius degree winter weather.

Russia imposed similar conditions on Lithuanian semis attempting to enter the federation via Latvia in the summer; after several days of trucks stuck at the crossing, the Lithuanian and Russian customs agencies negotiated an agreement allowing 29 logistics companies considered “in good standing” with the Russian customs union to pass the border normally.
