KAUNAS, Lithuania — A Kaunas police officer fatally struck a man in a vehicular accident on Wednesday evening, the second incident of its kind this month.

The officer, whose initials are R.Š., was off duty and driving his own car, a Citroen Xsara Picasso. Lina Nemeikaitė, spokeswoman for the Lithuanian Police Department, said the officer hit the man, whose age police estimated to be between 50 and 60, at approximately 7:10 P.M., “when he suddenly entered the road.”

The victim has yet to be identified.

According to police, blood tests showed that the driving police officer was not drunk.

The first incident in Kaunas occurred Dec. 5 when a 72-year-old woman was mortally wounded after being run over by a police car.
