KAUNAS, Lithuania — An explosive device damaged the store front of a watch shop in Kaunas early Monday morning, in what may by an attempted robbery, a prank or something else entirely.
The bomb went off at 4:50 a.m. at the base of the storefront of the Ženeva watch shop on Laisvės Avenue, the main promenade in Kaunas. The storefront was damaged, but not enough to gain entry into the shop. The explosion chipped and shattered the windows of nearby shops. Nobody was injured.
Forensic experts have determined that a small home-made bomb, the cartridge of which was found on-scene near the building, caused the blast.
Motivation unclear
Police say they are unsure of the motivation of setting off the device. There have been a spate of automated teller machine robberies in Kaunas, but bombing the storefront is far from the easiest way to gain entry in the watch shop, if attempted robbery was the motive. Police are also considering if the explosion was merely a prank or a diversionary tactic by gangsters to tie up police resources.
“Maybe someone is trying to divert attention away from underworld activity in the city, like the Agurkas (Cucumber) gang?” a police official told Lietuvos Rytas.
The infamous fugitive and Kaunas native Drąsius Kedys is allegedly involved with the Agurkas gang, according to police investigators.
