Water cut off in Kaunas, Klaipėda

KAUNAS, Lithuania — The extreme cold the past week caused several water and gas outages in the Lithuanian cities of Kaunas and Klaipėda.

In Klaipėda, residents on Laukininkų Street went 21 hours without water, while residents living at the intersection of Statybininkų Prospect and Šiaulių Street went 10 hours without.

In Kaunas, the municipal water department said it had to work ceaselessly all weekend to keep water flowing. Pipe bursts cut off water to 30 residences on Vainikų, Žiedų and Pumpurų streets.

“Most of the accidents have been corrected during the same day. But there are families in which the water will not resume until Monday afternoon,” municipal water department spokeswoman Ona Žotkevičienė told the press.

More serious is the gasline ruptures, which cut off heating. Lithuanian gas reported 30 cases over the weekend in Kaunas.

“Disruptions were eliminated on the same day, but people did not have gas for 2 to 3 hours,” Lithuanian Gas spokesman Andrius Pocius said.

No gas or water outages were reported in Vilnius.
