Avalanche kills famed mountaineer’s son

VILNIUS — The son of the first Lithuanian to climb Mt. Everest was found dead Sunday, killed by an avalanche while scaling the peaks of Slovakia’s Tatra Mountains.

Vaidotas Vitkauskas, the son of famed mountaineer Vladas Vitkauskas, was found dead by a group of climbers at the basin of a mountain near Kežmarok, Slovakia Sunday.

Other people in Vitkauskas’ group were injured by the avalanche.

This is the first fatal mountain-climbing incident this year in Slovakia.
