Girls found guilty of attacking teacher

KURESSAARE, Estonia — Two juvenile girls were found guilty at Kuressaare court house on Jan. 26 for violently attacking their educator last spring.

The 17-year-old girls escaped from the Kaagvere Correctional School for juvenile offenders on March 28, 2009, but a teacher attempted to try and stop them. The girls responded by assaulting the teacher. One girl pulled the teacher’s hair and violently pulled her left arm while the other girl pulled the right arm.

The girls took the teacher’s cell phone, removed its battery and threw it into [private_supervisor]the snow so the she would not be able to notify the school of their escape immediately. However, they were later caught.

One girl was sentenced for three months in jail with 18 months on probation. The other girl was sentenced to five months in jail and two years on probation, as she was also caught with theft.

Due to the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board’s new policy of only releasing information about certain cases, this story was not broke until Feb. 17 by Oma Saar, a Saaremaa Island local newspaper.
