Kanepi, Gulbis make quarterfinals

MEMPHIS, U.S — Estonian Kaia Kanepi and Latvian Ernests “The Gull” Gulbis have continued their push for their respective finals at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championship.

Kanepi was made to work hard against Czech wild-card Nicole Vaidišová, who pushed the Estonian to three sets. Dropping the first set 4-6, Kanepi then came to life in the second set, allowing the Czech just one game on the way to a 6-1 set win. This handed her the momentum, and although Vaidišová was able to give more of a [/private_supervisor]showing in the final set, Kanepi remained firm to claim the set and subsequently the match 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

The win sees Kanepi move into the quarter-finals where she will come up against another Czech and tournament no.5 seed Petra Kvitová. Kvitová has also advanced to this stage with relative ease, suggesting this will be a tight match. Victory in this impending match could potentially set up an enticing semi-final with Russian no.1 seed Maria Sharapova who is  making light work of opposition in her quarter of the draw.

In the meantime Gulbis is finally finding some consistency in the men’s draw, upsetting no. 3 men’s seed Redak Štěpánek, also of the Czech Republic. However, when discussing Gulbis, the word ‘upset’ should never lightly be bandied, as he has the ability to beat anyone on the tour when he puts his mind to it. Today, Štěpánek experienced what Gulbis is available of doing when he brings his game, cleaning the Czech up in two sets 7-6 (5), 7-5. Victory in the opening tiebreak could be the key for Gulbis, as past matches suggest that if he were to loses it, his game then implodes as a consequence.

It is yet to be determined who Gulbis will meet in his semifinal other than that it will either be against American Michael Russel, or another Czech no. 5 seed Tomáš Berdych.
