Dinamo Riga juggernaut temporarily halted

MOSCOW — Dinamo Riga have fallen 6-4 to Salavat Yulayev in their final regular season fixture in the KHL.

Trainer Julius Supler will be hoping that it was nothing more than a slight hiccup in their build up to their quarter-final [private_supervisor]opener against SKA St. Petersburg on Wednesday. Of particular concern was the way they relinquished a 3-0 lead with sloppy second period defense.

In something that has become a positive habit for Dinamo Riga of late, they rushed out to an commanding lead, on the back of outright domination in the opening stanzas of the game.

Goals to Miķelis Rēdlihs and Marcel Hossa in the ninth minute shocked the soon-to-be crowned regular season champions and when Lauris Dārziņš added his side’s third in the 18th, Salavat were well and truly looking down the barrel of defeat. Hossa’s goal was his 35th of the season, taking him eight clear of his nearest rivals.

However, Dinamo Riga went  completely off the boil in the second period, with sloppy defense not only letting their hosts back into the game but also handing them the lead, as they went on to score four unanswered second period goals. Errors that they may have been able to get away with against a lowlier opponent were pounced upon by the well drilled Salavat outfit.

Jānis Sprukts offered hope of a comeback in the eighth minute of the final period, adding Dinamo Riga’s fourth, but Salavat did not take long to resurrect their lead scoring just over eight minutes later.

Two games ago, Dinamo Riga benefited from an empty opposition net in the final seconds of the game as their opposition pulled the goalie in search of an equalizer, but on this occasion they were to be on the receiving end with Salavat finding the back of an empty net to wrap up the regular season with a victory.

Dinamo Riga will draw positives from their first period and put the remaining two behind them as their focus now turns to Wednesday as they seek to go one step further than last season.[/private_supervisor] [private_subscription 1 month]opener against SKA St. Petersburg on Wednesday.
