RIGA — Neatkarigie Nacionalie Mediji bought out News Corporation’s shares of LNT, Latvia’s most-watched TV station according to TNS, and the Russian-language TV5 this week.

On Wednesday Andrejs Ekis, the current general manager and founder of LNT and the chairman of Neatkarigie Nacionalie Mediji, announced that global media giant News Corporation had [private_supervisor]agreed to the sale.

Terms of the management buy-out have not been not disclosed.

News Corporation says the sale is part of its strategy to exit non-core businesses in order to focus on building scale businesses in its priority markets.

“Andrejs Ekis has been responsible for LNT’s market leadership since the channel’s launch in 1996. We are delighted that Andrejs and his team will continue to manage the business going forward,” Gary Davey, the chief operating officer of News Corp Stations Europe, said.

Ekis said Neatkarigie Nacionalie Mediji is taking advantage of the economic crisis to expand local control of Latvian television.

“LNT management made to News Corporation its best offer and one of its crucial components was the commitment to the same values that they had pursued over years when working as part of the world’s largest media group,” Ekis said in a press release.

Ekis said there are no plans to change either stations programming. [/private_supervisor] [private_subscription 1 month]agreed to the sale.
