Lithuanian floods slowly subsiding

VILNIUS — Flooding caused by the sudden melting of snow two weeks ago continues around Lithuania, but is beginning to subside, authorities report.

Flooding began in the country when the temperatures suddenly changed to positive and ice and snow flooded the country’s waterways. Many villages near rivers became partially submerged, particularly in the Kaunas region, and multiple items of livestock, cars and other property was lost or damaged.

Water levels are receding by around three cm per day in area surrounding the Curonian Lagoon, where most of the flood water is heading from around the country.

In major cities the flooding has not caused noticeable damage, but in the west of the country, 93 km of roads still lie submerged. It is believed that nearly 25,000 hectares of land are still under water across the country.

The depth of the flooding is now up to 1.1 meters in some areas. In the capital the river is still spilling over the banks of the river with water levels far higher than usual.

It is estimated by meteorologists that flooding could continue for another 20 days. Damage estimates are not available yet.
