KAUNAS, Lithuania — The main public spaces in Lithuania’s second largest city Kaunas could soon be declared smoke-free if the council approves the draft of the law.

Kaunas would be the third city in Lithuania to ban smoking in outdoor public areas after Klaipėda and Šiauliai declared some public spaces to be smoke-free. Indoor smoking in public places is already banned throughout Lithuania.

Under the law, smoking would be [private_supervisor]banned on the Laisvės, Daukanto and Vilniaus streets, at the Kaunas State Musical Theater, at the Vytautas the Great War Museum, the in the former President’s Palace grounds, in the Ąžuolynas and Santakos parks and the Old Cemetery.

Smoking will also be prohibited in the city in areas equipped with playgrounds for children and young people. Planning documents in future will have to take the ban into account and be marked accordingly.

Signage will be put up from June 1 when the ban will take effect if passed into law.

Šiauliai has three non-smoking areas and Klaipėda is expanding its areas to include public transport waiting areas, the sculpture park, Smiltynė Forest and all areas on and around the beach, except for designated smoking areas.

The bans are an attempt to curtail the high levels of smoking in the Baltic state. Lithuanians are the world’s 12th biggest smokers according to Gallup research done in 2007, with 34 percent of respondents saying they smoke daily. Estonia and Latvia rank slightly higher in seventh and eighth positions respectively.
