Gulbis starts well in Monte Carlo

MONACO — Latvian Ernests “The Gull” Gulbis comfortably moved through to the second round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters Monday.

For the second time this year, Gulbis found himself coming up against Swiss Marco Chiudinelli. On that previous occasion in Indian Wells, Gulbis prevailed in three, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.  It also happened to be the last game Gulbis had won before Monte Carlo, with Russian Nikolai Davydenko knocking him out in the preceding round.

On this occasion, Gulbis needed just two sets, defeating Chiudinelli 6-3, 6-2 in 1 hour 10 minutes. It was an impressive performance from the Latvian, who managed five aces and no double faults.

Gulbis will be back on court on Wednesday against a yet to be identified opponent.
