Sevastova storms into quarters

Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova quarterfinal entry could improve her WTA singles world ranking of 74.

ESTORIL, Portugal — Anastasija Sevastova has stormed into the Estoril Open quarterfinals, leading with ease when injury struck down her Japanese opponent.

In the first meeting of Sevastova and Kimiko Date Drumm it was the Latvian who had the upper hand before Date Drumm was forced to retire early when she was overcome by injury. At the time of the forced retirement Sevastova was leading 6-1, 4-2.

Sevastova was all over her Japanese opponent in the opening set, rallying back from being broken to in turn break Date Drumm three times to take the opening set 6-1.

Date Drumm was a little more on song on her own serve in the second set but unfortunately she was struck down by injury at 2-4 down, seeing Sevastova advance.

It is never the nicest way to advance but players need to play every card that comes their way.

In the semifinals Sevastova will either meet Australian Anastasia Rodinova or her second Hungarian opponent of the tournament Stefanie Vögele, who like Savastova are both unseeded.
