Sevastova gets first ever ATP title

Budding Latvian talent Anastasija Sevastova has played the best tennis of her career in Estoril.

ESTORIL, Portugal — Latvian Anastasija Sevastova has won her first ever ATP tour singles title.

The win came on a rain affected final day at the Estoril Open where she defeated Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja 6-2, 7-5.

In what was an evenly poised match, it was Parra Santjona’s inability to hold her own serve at crucial times which proved the matches deciding factor.

Playing in her first ever final, the 20 year old Latvian showed no sign of nerves, breaking Parra Santjona’s serve three times in the opening set to take it with ease.

Parra Santjona put up more of  a fight in the second set, but again showed fragility on her own serve, with an inability to shut out games proving costly with Sevastova again breaking her 3 times on the way to taking the second set 7-5.

Regardless of the fact that the tournament failed to entice any of the big names in women’s tennis, nothing should be taken away from Sevastova’s first tour victory. The victory is sure to see her world ranking rocket and the door open to more exclusive tournaments for the remainder of the year.
