Recycling law kicks in

TALLINN — A new law requiring posted verification that shipping packages are made from recycled material will come into force on Saturday.

All Estonian companies who package their goods will have to start showing the documents to the Tax and Customs Board to prove their packages are reused as stipulated by the Packaging Excise Duty Act. The new law was initiated by the Estonian ruling coalition in March and supported by the opposition Greens as a pro-environmental measure.

Under the law if a company will not does not include the necessary posting then it have to pay excise tax. The excise for paper packages is 20 krooni (€1.20) per kg, and in case of plastic package, 40,000 krooni (€2,500) per metric ton.
