Lith retail up 2.4%

VILNIUS — Lithuania’s beleaguered retail trade rate turned a corner this spring, growing by 2.4 percent at constant prices in May against April this year, according to the country’s central statistics bureau.

The statistics are a good sign for [private_supervisor]domestic demand, which has been in the doldrums since the crisis began almost two years ago choking off credit to the once-booming economy and sending unemployment rate sky-high.

Excluding motor vehicle traders, retail over the month period grew by 4.4 percent. The largest increase in new products was seen in retail sale of audio and video equipment, recordings, hardware, paints and glass, electrical household appliances, furniture and lighting equipment in specialized stores with 13.7 percent followed by non-specific retail at 10.9 percent. Food and beverage sales increased by 9.9 percent.

The increase in May is a sharp turnaround from the first quarter of the year when domestic demand was still very weak. Year on year in May, retail trade was still down 5.5 percent, however.

Retail turnover of secondhand goods in stores soared during the month by 24.3 percent.

The biggest drop during May against April was in automobile parts sales at -4.1 percent.
