Kidnapped sailor released by pirates

VILNIUS — Three sailors from the Baltic states along with 10 others were released on Sunday by Nigerian pirates after being abducted on May 16.

It’s unclear if ransom was used to free the men, as neither the Nigerian navy nor the embassies of the sailors’ home countries confirmed or denied it. The kidnappers have not been arrested, and a demand for ransom is usually the motive of the Nigerian pirates, affiliated with anti-government rebels that have been sabotaging oil industry activity on the Niger Delta.

The Lithuanian national Captain Dmitrij Baskirov was released along with another Lithuanian sailor named Aleksejus Sysojus and a Latvian sailor kidnapped in a separate incident.
