Heat wave unrelenting

RIGA — The heat wave that has kept the Baltics baking over the past month continues unrelentingly, with record temperatures being recorded in several Latvian cities on Monday.

Both Rēzekne and Daugavpils saw highs of 33˚C on Monday, while the capital of Riga was at 32˚C.

Up north in Estonia, the capital city of Tallinn expected to see 33˚C on Tuesday, with the heat expected to move south with Pärnu predicted to see 31˚C on Wednesday.

In Lithuania the capital of Vilnius hit 31˚C on Tuesday, with cloud cover keeping the temperature down a few degrees but pushing humidity to the max. However, the Lithuanian coast has already cooled off with temperatures in the lower 20s.

The heat wave has kept beaches packed as residents left their furnace-like apartment buildings, typically made of heat-absorbing concrete in the region and without air conditioning, to enjoy the sunny, hot weather.

There will be some respite from the heat in a few days. By the end of the week temperatures across the Baltics will recede down to the mid to lower 20s.
