Solaris in court fight

TALLINN — The Solaris Center is fighting a court battle with its building companies, accusing them of sloppy work and inflating costs.

Solaris Keskus AS claims the construction companies Merko and Skanska EMV for sloppy work and doubling the building bills which reach up to 5 million krooni (€320,500).

Solaris submitted a civil claim asking for [private_supervisor]the construction companies to cover all damages caused by negligent work, including the collapse of the Cinamon cinema ceiling which cost 7 million krooni (€447,300) and for overbilling to the Harju County Court in Feb. 19.

The construction companies deny the claim and say Solaris is unlawfully withholding payment for their services. Kristi Saaremet, press spokeswoman of Skanska EMV said Solaris did not pay 30 million krooni (€1.9 million) for construction works.

Merko turned to the German Aareal Bank, which gave a guarantee for the construction, for the money but Solaris petitioned for and received a court order to halt the payment.

Both Skanska and Merko say they are seeking to avoid a long and costly court battle, as civil litigation in Estonia typically takes years to resolve. Andres Aavik, project director at Skanska EMV said that the companies are willing to reach an extrajudicial agreement.

“Our and Merko’s wish is to find an extrajudicial agreement, and we are now ready to start negotiations,” Aavik told Baltic Reports.

Both Merko and Solaris declined to comment on the story when asked by Baltic Reports.
